As if traveling with kids isn't challenging enough, it can be extra stressful when you throw a bunch of passport numbers and customs lines into the mix. Follow these tips for making the immigration line a little less stressful for everyone
Make a photo album. Take screenshots of your travel documents and save them in a photo album on your phone. This way, you won't have to wake up your kid to dig through your bag for your passports when the flight attendant gives you the customs form.
Hide a stash of sweets. Keep a few lollipops or other candy hidden until you arrive at your destination. Break out one of those treats when your kids start getting cranky in the immigration line. Don't panic if you have a screamer on your hands. We have actually been moved to the front of the line due to a child throwing a tantrum. While convenient, I don't recommend this as a first choice.
Take a toilet break. Make sure everyone uses the bathroom on the plane before you land. Yes, it's a pain, but it will make things easier after you land. This way, you can head straight to passport control and skip the back of the line
Fanny packs/Belt Bags may or may not be cool, but they are useful. I recommend carrying your passports, boarding passes, gum, pen, and cash in one of these worn across your body. This keeps valuables close to you and allows for quick access when walking through the airport. It's easiest if one adult is in charge of all the travel documents. Let's be honest, its probably mom carrying this one. While I never thought I would say these words- I have both a casual and fancy belt bag option to choose between.
Roll them around. If you have a little one who refuses to walk, have them sit on top of your roller suitcase and wheel them through the airport. This works best with four-wheeled hard cases.
Be ready to answer some common questions. This is also where that photo album comes in handy.
What is the purpose of your trip?
How long do you intend to stay? (exact dates)
Where will you be staying? (exact address)
What is your occupation?
Do you have anything to declare?
7. Sign up for global entry or mobile passport control. These are helpful on the
way back into the United States. Children must have their own global entry
membership. To enroll, you will need to create an email address for them and link it to a Trusted Traveler Programs account. It also requires an interview. Mobile
Passport Control allows you to submit your travel documentation through an app
on a smart phone. It does not require pre approval and a single household can
submit everything under one transaction. Keep in mind, not all airports accept
Mobile Passport Control.
Happy Travels!
